Epicuro acreditava que o Universo era infinitamente velho e infinitamente extenso. Que este mesmo Universo seria de um imenso v\u00e1cuo mas que teria um grande n\u00famero (finito) de part\u00edculas s\u00f3lidas, os chamados \u00e1tomos. Tais &#8220;\u00e1tomos&#8221; eram as part\u00edculas fundamentais de constru\u00edam tudo o que existia.<\/p>\n<p>Os epicuristas ou atomistas, foram celebrados pelo poeta romano Lucrecius Carus (99-55 a.C.). Em seu grande poema &#8220;<em>De Rerum Natura<\/em>&#8220;, Lucrecius ressalta a superioridade das ideias dos atomistas sobre os conceitos aristot\u00e9licos. Ele escreveu em sua &#8220;Hist\u00f3ria Natural&#8221; que as &#8220;estrelas cadentes&#8221; poderiam at\u00e9 parecer cair, mas na verdade, estando os \u00e1tomos de fogo em ambiente ultra seco, acabamo por voltar \u00e0 Terra em forma de fagulhas. Pl\u00ednio chegou a admitir que eram poss\u00edveis algumas &#8220;quedas&#8221;. E tudo estava compilado em seu livro <em>Meteorologica,\u00a0<\/em>em 357 a.C.. E em rela\u00e7\u00e3o ao que nos compete, em termos da \u00e1rea de estudo dos meteoros, as &#8220;estrelas cadentes aristot\u00e9licas&#8221; ocorrem na alta atmosfera, logo abaixo do topo da primeira esfera celestial.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Arist\u00f3teles afirmava que o Sol gerava exala\u00e7\u00f5es na Terra. Tais exala\u00e7\u00f5es seguiam o curso para encontrar seus lugares naturais dentro da esfera da regi\u00e3o sublunar, seguindo as qualidades: quente\/frio e seco\/\u00famido. Assim, exala\u00e7\u00f5es secas e quentes subiriam ao topo dos c\u00e9us, enquanto o frio e o \u00famido se manteria pr\u00f3ximo a Terra.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Considerando esta din\u00e2mica dos vapores, Arist\u00f3teles p\u00f4s-se a explicar todos os fen\u00f4menos transientes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Os meteoros eram constitu\u00eddos de vapores quentes e secos que entravam em combust\u00e3o.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Interessante \u00e9 perceber que Arist\u00f3teles dividia as &#8220;estrelas cadentes&#8221; em tr\u00eas grupos. Divididas por caracter\u00edsticas de apar\u00eancia, disposi\u00e7\u00e3o e qualidade do vapor contido na igni\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Eram os flashes, as tochas e as estrelas cadentes, que ele chamava de &#8220;cabras&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Nunca ficou claro o uso do termo &#8220;cabra&#8221; para os fireballs que se fragmentavam. Sabe-se que o termo original, utilizado por Arist\u00f3teles era caprae, palavra esta que originou os termos caprino e caprichoso, por exemplo. Assim, a melhor associa\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 que, como os fireballs eram imprevis\u00edveis, Aristoteles quis apelid\u00e1-los de cabras, por seu car\u00e1ter err\u00e1tico e aleat\u00f3rio.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Um dos fatores que levaram \u00e0 durabilidade do modelo aristot\u00e9lico para os meteoros foi de que as &#8220;estrelas cadentes&#8221; eram fen\u00f4menos bem pouco recorrentes e somente mais vistos na alta madrugada. Al\u00e9m do fato de que as ideias de Arist\u00f3teles eram realmente atraentes para a \u00e9poca que n\u00e3o se possu\u00eda o conceito de m\u00e9todo cient\u00edfico.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Quando S\u00eaneca 3 a.C. &#8211; 65 d.C. citou as &#8220;estrelas cadentes&#8221; em sua obra &#8220;Quest\u00f5es Naturais&#8221;, ele derivou apenas um pouco do entendimento de Arist\u00f3teles. E \u00e9 curioso notar como os astr\u00f4nomos \u00e1rabes, mesmo sem interesse em explicar o fen\u00f4meno dos meteoros, eram muito eficientes em anotar todas as ocorr\u00eancias poss\u00edveis dos mesmos. Isto se devia por conta da associa\u00e7\u00e3o de uma intensa chuva de meteoros e a primeira revela\u00e7\u00e3o do profeta Maom\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Na Europa, os conceitos aristot\u00e9licos foram moldados para servir de suporte \u00e0s bases da doutrina religiosa. Desta modo, as explica\u00e7\u00f5es &#8220;cient\u00edficas&#8221; encaixavam nos preceitos b\u00edblicos e clericais.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Henry de Langestein (1325 &#8211; 1397) publicou estudos onde afirmava que Deus havia dado as condi\u00e7\u00f5es para o surgimento das &#8220;estrelas cadentes&#8221; no terceiro dia da cria\u00e7\u00e3o. Willian Caxton em sua enciclop\u00e9dia &#8220;O espelho do mundo&#8221; que seria poss\u00edvel encontrar os res\u00edduos das &#8220;estrelas cadentes&#8221;.
